It's A Gift

…some thoughts about gifts and giving and about life in general

What Will You Do With This Whole New Year?

The holidays are over and so, thankfully, is my annual inventory at the hobby shop! This year will be a year of profound change for me and my family as I’ll be closing the retail shop and moving the gift basket portion of my business to our home. Annual inventories should be much easier for me from here on.

At the moment, my feelings about the upcoming year are mixed. There are definitely some things I’ll miss about running the shop, and I do appreciate the support of my long-time customers. I think that 27 years is enough to work at one job though, and it’s time for me to move forward. The two most important pieces of advice I can give to any independent business person, especially anyone involved in retail sales, are: 1. listen to your customers, and 2. somehow manage to buy your own premises. For many, this last necessity means that they run on-line only businesses from their homes. Rental costs for decent locations can easily eat up any profits you might have had.

What do you plan to do differently in this new year? Are there big changes looming in your life?
