How to Make a Gel Candle – Further Tips

I mentioned some facts about choosing your fragrances in the previous article. The next step in learning how to make a gel candle is to choose the type of wick you will use.

Some vendors of gel candle making supplies offer pre-waxed, tabbed wicks. I personally am not a fan of these as they will slightly cloud your transparent gel wax near the wick. They would also prove more expensive if you plan to make many candles.

I learned from experience that the best type of wick for gel candles is a wire-core type. I doubt that you would find a lead-based type left in the US, but it doesn’t hurt to double check and make sure that it’s a zinc core before you buy. I had started out using a large braided wick without the wire core and it seemed fine at first, but I found that over time the wick would slump and sometimes actually submerge in the gel. Don’t short-change your customers and/or create a lot of extra work for yourself – use the right wick in the first place!

I also recommend using a wick tab, especially in small, shallow burning candles. If you don’t, your wick may start to float and drown itself in the pool of melted gel wax. I like the “long-necked” type of wick tab as it is also a built-in precaution to keep people from burning their candles too far down and risking over-heating and cracking of the container.

I said that I would address the issue of bubbles in your gel candles but found that it didn’t make as much sense as a follow-up to my first gel candle post as this one did. I will get to that topic, but might address a few other things first.

  6. The United States is really composed of a bunch of tiny countries. It is really cool to see how there are different laws in each state and how each of them keep order. I am surprised that there isn’t more arguing between states but I think someday there will be. There is too much pride in each one for horrible things not to happen some day. It might not be a bad idea to just have one law for all states instead of them being able to create their own. Thoughts?

  7. This comment certainly has nothing to do with the post it’s supposed to refer to; however, since it is a lot more interesting than most of the stuff I find in the Spam filter, I decided to approve it and see if anyone else responds.

  14. I would say that most of the work is just coming up with something to write about. If you use WordPress and find one of their templates that will work for you, plus some plugins to take care of SEO, catch Spam, etc., you won’t have to worry about programming anything.
