It's A Gift

…some thoughts about gifts and giving and about life in general

Gifting “Dos and Don’ts”

You may or may not know that I am a gift basket professional. You can see some examples of my work at my Greenbriar Gift Basket website.

In my opinion, the most crucial thing about giving gifts, whether personal or business, is to make sure that the gift is all about the recipient, not all about you! In some cases, especially in the business realm, you may not have a lot of knowledge of the person you are sending the gift to. In this case a general food or spa type gift basket is probably your best bet; however, it never hurts to make up a “cheat sheet” about your prospective recipient. Write down the person’s name, then start making notes underneath. If this is a person that you have had any dealings with, you may know more about him or her than you realize. Have you noticed that most of the time he wears a blue shirt? Unless it’s a required part of a work uniform, that may well be his favorite color. Do photos of her pets take up the place of honor on her desk? That’s a valuable clue to take into consideration. Definitely DO try to make it obvious that a lot of thought has gone into this gift and that it was made especially for him or her.

I’ll tell you a story to illustrate one of the DON’TS. My husband decided a few years ago that I needed a microwave for use in my place of business. I did not agree — really didn’t want one and always let him know that when he’d mention it. Christmas came along and I had a bad feeling about what I’d find under the tree. Actually, it wasn’t even under the tree anyway as he thought he’d make things more “fun” by hiding the damn thing and handing me a ribbon to follow to find my main Christmas present (through the house, out into the yard, then back in again). Oh boy, that was nearly the last straw! Not only was I upset that he obviously never listened and insisted on giving me something that I did not want, I actually ended up feeling slightly guilty for spoiling his fun. This is definitely not how you want the recipient of your gift to feel!

  1. Sorry to bring this here but I dunno where I should leave suggestions? Anyway your pages seems to load slow from time to time and I noticed that you have a few Javascripts in your sourcecode. You should let them load last. After the whole page has loaded. That will greately benefit the ones that don’t have internet with a gazillion mb download line. Thanks! Jennifer.

  2. Thanks for the feedback. I use very little, if any, javascript in my own coding, but don’t want to get into a fight with the code on this WordPress platform! Every time I’ve tried that in the past, I have lost.

  8. Since I’ve received so many similar “comments”, I expect that this is just one more piece of spam, but just in case it’s not — sure, I could use links too.
