Gel Candle-making – What if I Want Those Bubbles?

In my last post on gel candle-making, I gave you some tips on how to get rid of the bubbles if your goal was to make a clear, bubble-free candle.

Sometimes, though, you may actually not only want the bubbles, but you may want even more of them than would normally occur. In this case you will not want to pre-coat the wick with gel since the air trapped in the wick fibers will help get more bubbles into your candle. You will also want to pour the gel at the lowest working temperature you can manage. I usually do this by turning off the heat and letting the gel cool, stirring fairly frequently, until it’s the consistency of partially set gelatin (Jello). If you don’t stir it, the gel on the bottom of the pan will actually set and you’ll end up having to reheat then cool the gel two or three times in the course of pouring your candles. You should avoid this as it not only takes more time and work, but it will also drive off more of your fragrance.

If you want gel candles with lots of bubbles they should also be made as close to the time you need them as possible. This is because, as noted in my previous post, over time the bubbles will eventually rise to the surface and dissipate. Keeping the candles in a cool environment will help to keep them at their best a little longer.

When I make my champagne candles and beer candles, I usually only make six or less of these at a time so that I won’t end up having to re-make them. After all, who wants “flat” champagne or beer?
